Electronic Prescription Service (EPS)

What is EPS?

The practice now has a better way to issue prescriptions and has moved across to using the electronic prescription service (EPS) that is being rolled out across England.

Instead of writing or printing paper prescriptions, we are be able to send them directly to the pharmacy of your choice. This is more convenient and there is no need to visit us just to collect a prescription. This method is both more secure and safer.

How does it work?

You will be asked to nominate a pharmacy that is most convenient for you to use and to let that pharmacy know. Afterwards, when you get a prescription it will be sent directly to them. They will still need time to process it, just as they do now.

Key Features

  • You do not need a computer – it is all processed for you.
  • You can change your nominated pharmacy whenever you want.
  • You can still choose a different pharmacy for one particular prescription.
  • Your personal details are safe – the secure NHS network is used and can only be accessed if authorised.
  • Electronic prescription cannot be lost or altered.
  • Repeat prescriptions are still ordered in the same way but are issued electronically rather than printed.
  • The move is part of a National programme and not just happening here in Norwich.

What does this mean for you?

If you collect your repeat prescriptions from us, in future you will not have to visit us to pick up your paper prescription. Instead, we will send it electronically to the pharmacy you choose, saving you time. The pharmacy you choose can be near to where you live, work or shop.

Is this service right for you?

Yes, if you have a stable medical condition and you:

  • Don’t want to come here every time to collect your repeat prescription.
  • Collect your medicines from the same place most of the time or already use a prescription collection service now.

It may not be if you:

  • Don’t get prescriptions very often.
  • Pick up your medicines from different places.

What you need to do to use EPS

You need to choose a place for us to electronically send your prescription to. This is called a nomination.

If you wish to nominate a pharmacy, please complete our Register for the Electronic Prescription Service form.

If you don’t want your prescription to be sent electronically and would still prefer a paper version, please tell your GP.

If you want to change or cancel your nomination, speak to any pharmacist before your next prescription is due or your prescription may be sent to the wrong place.
